Year 3 pupils at Rothwell Victoria go for a one hour swimming lesson once a week from February half term to the end of the academic year. In Year 4, they continue with the weekly session from the start of the academic year up to February half term. Both Year 3 and Year 4 children therefore get a year of one hour sessions. Swimming lessons take place at Rothwell Leisure Centre where the children are taught by a mixture of the Leisure Centre staff and also Rothwell Victoria Junior School staff (all are qualified swimming teachers).
The National Curriculum requirement for all children leaving Year 6 is to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
From September 2019, children who have not met the National Curriculum requirement at the end of Year 4 will attend top up lessons at the end of Year 6.

Swimming Guidelines:
The national curriculum requirement is for children at the end of KS2 to be able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Below is an example of how children’s swimming attainment will be reported at the end of the year 4. From September 2019, pupils in year 6 who are still unable to swim 25m with effective stoke technique will be offered top-up swimming lessons in the summer term.
